Re: GENERAL: Vaginal Pain

This does not sound like pain from a Bartholin cyst. It sounds more
like levator spasm, or piriformis syndrome, both of which cause
tenderness within the vagina, usually on one side or the other. To
diagnose this, an ob/gyn places one finger in the vagina and presses
against the various muscles. If one or more hurts during the exam, then
it suggests spasm or tenderness of one of the muscle groups. Treatment
depends on the severity, but can include biofeedback, vaginal physical
therapy (yes, there are physical therapists that specialize in this),
vibration therapy, muscle relaxants and even vaginal injections.
Unfortunately some ob/gyn physicians don't know much about these
conditions, so ask yours if he or she has experience with this and, if
not, if she or he can refer you to someone who has. Best wishes,
Ashley Hill
