Re: BREASTHEALTH: nipple discharge

I have had episodes of milky discharge from my breasts a couple of times since having my children. Once was after I had stopped nursing my first child, and it happened years after weaning her. I went to the dr and he ran a fasting prolactin level, which was normal and did an in depth breast exam.

I have had episodes since weaning my second child 4 years ago. It is my understanding this can go on for years after having a child. It is not typical though. If it continues I would make an appointment with your GYN and have a prolactin blood level run as well as your thyroid level and a breast exam.

Most likely it is nothing to be concerned about more of a nuisance than anything. Try not to squeeze your nipple or express the breast as it could increase the amount or frequency.

Don't worry! It shouldn't be anything serious.
