Re: INFERTILITY: Endometrial Polyps - D&C Necessary? (Continued)From: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 15 Jan 2008 22:59:05 -0600 (CST)
Although your polyp is small, it's possible that it is the cause of your abnormal bleeding. The lining of the uterus has a small surface area, and even small polyps can cause the symptoms you describe. Nobody is sure that removing them helps conception or prevents miscarriage, but there is some evidence that this is the case. Normally I would recommend removal. However, a D&C is NOT the correct procedure for removal. The best procedure is a hysteroscopic polypectomy. I don't know a nice way to say this, but if your doctor is not going to perform a hysteroscopy, please obtain a second opinion right away. A D&C is a "blind" procedure where the doctor basically scrapes the uterine lining, hoping to remove the polyp, which may or may not come off during the procedure. A hysteroscopy involves a small tube with a camera and light, that allows removal of the entire polyp under direct observation. Also, the anesthesia is usually very straigtforward. I am doing 3 of these tomorrow. Good luck, and best wishes. Ashley Hill
