PREGNANCY: Baby has SVT that has not converted in 4 weeksFrom: Cathy V. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 3 Jan 2008 17:16:52 -0600 (CST)
I'd like to say thanks in advance to any replies I may get. To make this a shorter version I'll try and skip some of the finer details. I went in Dec. 7th 2007 for a normal OBGYN appointment and ended up getting rushed off to the hospital instead. The baby was showing a heart rate of 245's - 260's on the non stress machine and ultrasound. Dr. quickly told me it was SVT and I would only be in the hospital for a few days.. if that and I'd be back. They started me on 3 loading doses of digoxin and it slowed the baby's heart rate about 10 beats.. I was tolerating the drugs well so they put me on a regular floor (not the High Risk floor where I had been all hooked up to everything). Later in the day (Dec 10th) they did an echocardiogram and saw some fluid around the heart so I went back up to the High Risk floor and they decided to start Flecainide along with the digoxin. Still nothing, just a slight slowing of the heart rate. I was on 200 mgs a day and .25 of digoxin. On the 17th they upped it to 300mgs a day, still in the 200's and then on the 18th they upped it to 200 mgs in the morning, 150mgs at night. I was later released that day and told I'd have appointments twice a week to check on baby and I because it still wasn't converted. So here I am, January 3rd 2008 and its still not under control. Instead the fluid is now gone, but there is a hole in the heart which they say they're not worried about, and then today at my two appointments (perinatal cardiologist & the perinatal center) the Perinatal cardiologist said that the ductus is "kinked" but wouldn't go into details about it. My question is--- What is a "kinked" ductus and what kind of effect will it have on this baby that already has SVT-- what does it mean for this pregnancy? I'm now at 34 weeks. All of the doctors seem so up in the air about everything and won't tell me much even when I DO have questions-- its like dodgeball. Will this baby suffer any neurological damage if I go to term with him not having his SVT under control? (Baby's heart beat is still in the 190's - 220's.. there are breaks but very few and far between-- I monitor him at home between visits). Thanks, sorry this is so long.. I'm so sick of being stressed out and not getting any good news at each appointment. I can't seem to even find any info on the net and I have no idea what these big medical terms are to even determine if its something related to what my baby is going through or NOT. -Cathy V.
