Pat, thank you for the clarification regarding to the dosage in terms of prophylaxys. According to http://adam.about.com/reports/000036_7.htm “Typical prophylactic regimens include one dose of nitrofurantoin (50 mg), 1/2 tablet of TMP-SMX, or cephalexin (250 mg) daily.” It causes the next question: where one could find a recommended doses for the list of UTI antibiotics in terms of prophylaxyx purpose only? Are they established in the literature? I have read various web articles and was unable to find sources recommending a dose for prophylactic ones. Actually articles very rarely address a prophylactic dosage. Checking the on-line “guidelines”, I can not find a firm recommendation so I would like to defer to your input as to what occurs in clinical practice with the attached list of the most frequently prescribed UTI antibiotics.
