PREGNANCY: 5 caesarean sectionsFrom: sylvia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 30 Oct 2007 16:48:40 -0500 (CDT)
I would like to be pointed towards any research in the USA or UK into the risks of having a 5th caesarean section. I have 4 children, who have all been born via c/s, the first being an emergency, which resulted in severe disability subsequent to hypoxic ischaemic encephaolopathy. My 2nd was advised to be a c/s because of the trauma of the first. When it came to the 3rd, i was offered a trial of scar, which sounded very scary and so I turned it down. We decided to stop at 3. However a year ago my first born's life expectancy was halved to around 25 years, due to health problems. We decided to have another baby but because there is a 7 year gap between the 3rd and 4th, we wanted to have a 5th quite soon. I am 37 years old. Having written to my obstetrician, he informed that although there was nothing medically contraindicated in my history or any scar tissue or thinning of the uterine wall, he would not advise any more due to the high risk for placenta accreta, hysterectomy, etc, etc. Whilst I appreciate his concern, i would really like to make an informed decision as to whether to try for another baby or not. I don't want to be stupid about it. Any research articles or studies would be valuable. Many thanks, Sylvia
