GYNECOLOGIC: iud and irregular bleeding

I've had a copper IUD for 2 years and have had regular periods and no
problems. For the last 3 cycles, however, I've had spotting and some
cramping that lasts from mid-cycle to a few days before my period
arrives. My doctor did an ultrasound and the IUD is where it is
supposed to be. I know that bleeding w/the copper IUD is common but I'd
like to understand why it is starting now and what could be causing it.
