MENORRHAGIA: Is an endometrial biopsy necessary?

I posted a few weeks ago about a prolonged period I was having. It was the first one in my whole life. My period came on time, was normal, however, it just kept lingering lightly every day until the next period. The next period came, on time, was normal, and stopped. I have had no other pains, cramps, or anything.

I went in for a pelvic and transvaginal u/s last week and the results were good. My endo lining was nice and thin. My ovaries looked good and I had one small fibroid about the size of my pinky fingertip. The NP said that there was nothing of concern showing from the u/s.

I asked for a full bloodwork to be done to test my thyroid, etc. I will go for that next week.

In the meantime, I need to have my annual pap done and the NP told me that I need an endometrial biopsy done. I am confused as to why. Everything shows up fine but because I have had ONE irregular period which is most likely due to hormones being wacky or my thyroid, they need to do a biopsy?????? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I am going to decline on it for now but just wanted to get feedback as to why my doctor would tell me this. Is it standard practice to do a biopsy or one irregular period with u/s's that have come back fine, too??? I can see if this is something that I've been experiencing for a few months or something but just one time doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Thanks for your input.
