Daisy-

This is a great question. Depo-provera is a progestin, and progestins work to thin the lining of the uterus (called the endometrial lining). Sometimes they work a little too well and really thin the lining, leading to an irritated endometrium. This can cause frequent, even daily bleeding. Of course, there are other conditions that can cause this symptom. Normally I ask my patients to check a home pregnancy test, and, if negative (it usually is), to take a 10-14 day course of estrogen. This often does the trick. If not, then I usually ask her to come in for an exam or quick look inside the uterus to make sure there are no polyps or fibroids or infection. Unfortunately, I doubt the bleeding will stop on it's own, so I would go ahead and make the appointment. Best wishes,

Ashley Hill
