MENORRHAGIA: Prolonged period

I am 39 years old and have ALWAYS had regular periods. However, on 9/13 I got my period and it was on time and normal except it never stopped. It lingered lightly until my next cycle which started on 10/14. I am hoping that it will stop this time but I don't know yet.

I went to my OB and saw the NP there who suggested I have a pelvic u/s which I have scheduled for next week. She said that as soon as I mentioned that I have fibroids. She also handed a pamphlet to me with surgery options and saying I probably would need a D&C.

I don't feel comfortable with all of these things being thrown at me when they really have no idea what the problem is.

I called back the next day and told the NP that I forgot to tell her that I wanted to have a complete bloodwork done to check my thyroid and hormones and she told me that I would have to go to my primary physician for that.

Needless to say, I'm going to have a second opinion and see what another OB tells me. Personally I think I should have the u/s AND bloodwork done before suggesting any type of surgery procedure.

I suspect that this may be hormonal because I have other symptoms which I've had for months now which are hair loss, forgetfullness(MAJOR) and decreased libido.

My question is has anyone experienced anything like this before? Have you had a really wacky cycle and then the next cycle comes and everything is back on track? If so, what could cause this?

Thanks,
