All contraceptives reduce the risk of ectopic pregnancies because they reduce the overall risk of becoming pregnant. With IUDs the risk of ectopic is lower, but if you become pregnant, it's more likely to be in the tube rather than in the uterus. However, with the pill or patch, there is not an increased risk of ectopic. It sounds like you do not have any risk factors for ectopic, and had one because of bad luck. Best wishes,
