Re: STD: HPV helpFrom: Pat Sonnenstuhl (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 26 Sep 2007 14:55:52 -0500 (CDT)
Your email raises some interesting points. Here is my perspective: HPV is a type of virus that can be silent. In other words, you might not see it and it gets transferred mainly sexually, but there is also an association with throat cancer, and even during pregnancy/birth, transferring to the next generation. And of course, an association with cervical cancer. Prevention is challenging, and thus the push for the HPV vaccine. It is hard to say where you got the virus initially, but such virus's are pretty common, and difficult to get rid of in the long term, if ever. Your partner might not know of ever being exposed, and it just isn't helpful to try to determine where it started. What is important is to prevent the spread. Condoms help, certainly. Certain strains are associated with cancer, while other strains aren't. I know, its a tricky one. I think it can also be spread through skin, such as fingers. So, it is hard to know how to prevent the spread once its been identified....
