Re: GYNECOLOGIC: Is there a relationship between UTI and irregular menstruation? From: D. Ashley Hill (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 25 Sep 2007 21:19:07 -0500 (CDT)
There are many reasons why someone might miss their menstrual cycle for several months, including pregnancy, hypothyroidism, elevated prolactin levels, anorexia, very vigorous exercise, premature menopause, certain non-cancerous brain tumors, perhaps severe stress, and lack of ovulation (called "anovulation" in medical lingo). Anovulation is the second most common cause after pregnancy. After a negative workup, most ob/gyn physicians will prescribe a progesterone pill or shot then see if this induces bleeding. If this works, the diagnosis is anovulation and your doctor can look for a source. If it doesn't work it's back to more testing. Basic UTIs are not a cause of abnormal or missed periods, with the very rare exception of septic shock from a kidney infection. I assume you don't have this, because you would be typing the question from the intensive care unit :) I would suggest talking about this again with your ob/gyn. This is pretty basic stuff for ob/gyn doctors. However, if your doctor is not comfortable with this, he or she might consider referring you to a reproductive endocrinologist. Good luck and best wishes,
