Re: GYNECOLOGIC: Is there a relationship between UTI and irregular menstruation?

There are many reasons why someone might miss their menstrual cycle for several months, including pregnancy, hypothyroidism, elevated prolactin levels, anorexia, very vigorous exercise, premature menopause, certain non-cancerous brain tumors, perhaps severe stress, and lack of ovulation (called "anovulation" in medical lingo). Anovulation is the second most common cause after pregnancy. After a negative workup, most ob/gyn physicians will prescribe a progesterone pill or shot then see if this induces bleeding. If this works, the diagnosis is anovulation and your doctor can look for a source. If it doesn't work it's back to more testing.

Basic UTIs are not a cause of abnormal or missed periods, with the very rare exception of septic shock from a kidney infection. I assume you don't have this, because you would be typing the question from the intensive care unit :)

I would suggest talking about this again with your ob/gyn. This is pretty basic stuff for ob/gyn doctors. However, if your doctor is not comfortable with this, he or she might consider referring you to a reproductive endocrinologist. Good luck and best wishes,
