CONTRACEPTION: want to skip period

I am 21 (no pregnancies). I was on a variety of birth contral (bc) pills for about 4.5 years, but it has been about 16 months since the last time I took bc. I am on my period right now and am wanting to skip or delay my next period because I will be on vacation. I still have a pack of pills from when I was last on bc and want to know if it would be effective right away if I were to begin taking them at the end of this period and then skipped the inactive row and started a new pack while I was on vacation. If not, is there any other way that I can skip or delay this one period? Thank you!
