This is very common. The starting date is just a day, and with a period its pretty well for certain that you aren't pregnant. I would recommend using a back up method throughout the month, as you probably will still be adjusting to remembering to take the pill everyday, and its a nice safety precaution. But, in general, the pill is considered effective once you start taking it. Ovulation occurs a week or more after your LMP, so you are in a safe period right now, but using a back up method will reassure you.
