I was surprised that a bone density test is usually not mentioned by our doctors. I just happened to go to one that cost me $10.00 - a heel or finger bone density test. I was in my late 40's. Luckily I found I need to be more careful about calcium, exercise, etc. for my bones. I also was eligible for a dexascan because of doing the heel/finger bone density test. Many womens/health fairs have the heel/finger bone density test for FREE or very little cost. -- Hope

Weight loss can mean bone loss for older women

"Losing weight around the time of menopause may accelerate the bone loss that women typically see as they age, a new study suggests.

The findings do not mean that overweight women shouldn't try to shed pounds, researchers caution. But they do suggest that middle-age or older women who lose weight need to pay extra attention to their bone health."
