I can see the rate of a PCOS dx climbing beyond what it needs to be. As the medical pros on this board know, and as the women who live with PCOS know, this illness is related to so many systems in a woman's body, it is very hard to correctly dx it without giving a false dx of something else first (how many other women, for years, were told by their general practitioner that they were simply overweight, or not tracking their cycles right, or simply had severe cramps when they were really bursting a cyst, or told they were not tracking their cycles right and that was why they were not able to concieve?)? So, I think this "revelation" can go one of two ways, as far as the women who have PCOS are concerned. It can either help to further treatments (a cure is too much to hope for right now, how about just funding for more research for treatments) and prevent other women from being told the thigns above for years before someone will properly dx them. OR it could cause PCOS to become over-dx, possibly causing other conditions that may share one or two SS of PCOS to be looked over or mistaken for PCOS. BUT, if this article is taken at face value and used as part of a package of proof to insurance companies of how many women are effected by PCOS and some of the subsequent research I feel these findings may help fund may be able to prove that the physical effects of PCOS (i.e. skin tags, hair loss, body hair, etc...) are actually from a medical condition and not a strictly cosmetic thing and, maybe, just maybe, we will be closer to insurance companies treating the proceedures to correct these things (laser hair removal, hair transplants, etc...) as they do breast augmentations or Lasik eye surgery, as a treatment that would help increase our mental health. Maybe this study, as sad as it is, is what we need to increase awareness of PCOS to mainstream so more funding can be raised for research. I think it speaks volumes when a pharmacy tech with almost 15 years experience does not know what PCOS is, even when you actually say the words, not only the letters.
