MENORRHAGIA: Progesterone deficiency?From: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 28 Aug 2007 07:31:53 -0500 (CDT)
Hi-- I've been charting my periods for 5 months post birth control pills. Usually, my periods are quite light-- 1 day spotting, 2 days blood. I appear to be ovulating, with a temperature rise, and have a 11 or 12 day luteal cycle. This month, I must have ovulated early; my temps were all over the place, although with some biphasic pattern, and my period came early. Or else I had a very short luteal phase; it's hard to tell from the temps. I had been on a week long camping trip, so that might have caused the hormone fluctuations or the temp. difficulties. This was also the first month of trying to conceive; late in my cycle, I had unfamiliar cramping and a persistent headache. Two days later, my temperature dropped and another day later, I began spotting. I spotted very dark brown for 3 days, before lightly bleeding for <18 hours, then another day of very dark brown spotting. Could I have a luteal phase deficiency (the Wechsler book mentions dark brown spotting for several days before the period as a possible sign) or perhaps this was a one-time problem (although the consistent under-14 day lp worries me). If so, should I try an OTC progesterone cream, since I do ovulate and have a near-normal luteal phase? My doctor is booked, I'm heading to a conference in another town, and I should ovulate next week, so I'm eager to resolve the issue if at all possible. Thank you for any help.
