ENDOMETRIOSIS: Laparotomy

I am 30 years old and diagnosed with Endometriosis when I was 13. I have had 3 laparoscopies for Endo, Ovarian Cyst and Bowel Adhesions. I am having pain again so my doctor suggested a Laparotomy opposed to the Laparoscopy because he is worried that I have another bowel adhesion and does not want to risk puncturing my bowel by pushing the laparoscope through my belly. Has anyone had a laparotomy and can you tell me what your experience was with it? It sounds like a major surgery with alot of recovery time.
