MENORRHAGIA: Perimenopause and Cystic OvariesFrom: Anna Radziewicz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 25 Jul 2007 06:36:07 -0500 (CDT)
I had gastric bypass surgery about 4 years ago. I lost 100+ lbs. Since that time I've had recurrent menstrual irregularities. I am 46 years old and since age 42 have been experiencing irregular periods. My periods abruptly stopped after being regular pretty much all my life. Then after not having a period for three months or more I had what I thought was a regular period. Then two weeks after that bleeding recurred and this has been my pattern for the last several years. I've been on and off BCP to regulate my hormones. Once I get off them after a few months my menstrual pattern happens again. I've had sonograms, hormone levels, biopsys etc... and the only thing they can come up with is that I'm perimenopausal and because of my weight loss my hormones are out of whack. Both my ovaries now have multiple cysts and again I'm being put on BCP pills to regulate my cycle. Do you think that I will be on BCP pills until menopause? Is this safe? Should a perimenopausal woman be forming multiple cysts on both ovaries? I do not have any symptoms of menopause other than irregular periods. (No insomnia, no hot flashes etc...). My GYN says that I'm having anovulatory periods and that I need to shed my lining otherwise I could be at risk for endometrial cancer that is why he wants to put me on BCP so I can have a period every month. Could this just be my body and its response to wrong hormone signals. Do I really need to do anything? Even on BCP pills I tend to bleed through them at times. I'm anemic, B-12 deficient, Vitamin D deficient due to GBS and I guess the anemia due to recurrent bouts of bleeding. When I get my period sometimes I think what I'm experiencing is normal then I get these "funky" periods which I know are not normal. They come out of no where. I pass mega clots and bleed significantly longer. I currently have achiness on both sides and my back which I normally do not experience any kind of cramping, bloating, etc.... My endometrial lining does fluctuate. It's been as thin as 2mm and as thick as 11 mm. I had a sono in April and had not had a period in 3 1/2 months and my lining was 2 mm and my right ovary only had one cyst and my left ovary had no cysts. I had two periods in July two weeks from one another and my sono showed that now both ovaries have multiple cysts and my endometrial lining is now 3 mm in thickness. After having a period wouldn't my lining be less thick and not have increased in a few months? How did my ovaries develop so many cysts in such a short period of time? Can this pattern continue until I'm in menopause?
