PMS: PMS symptoms after period?

My wife is in her early 40s, no longer on contraception, in good overall health, had two children in her late 20s/early 30s. Her PMS symptoms (extreme irritability) are now starting to vary in their timing and severity. In the last four or five years, she has started to experience PMS symptoms only after her period begins or, if the symptoms begin prior to her period, the peak intensity is after the onset of her period.

She had a difficult time with PMS before our first child and between our first and second. However, between her second pregnancy and a few years ago, the extreme cases diminished in frequency. Now they are on the rise.

Might this be a symptom of perimenopause? Something else?
