CONTRACEPTION: starting the pill again after missing a month

I didn't get my persciption filled soon enough and missed starting a new pack. I have been on the pill for about 5 years and never missed a month. I thought that I would just wait until I started my period and then start the new pack, but I haven't started yet. It has been 38 days sense my last period. I took a pergnancy test and it was negative. When can I start a new pack? Do I have to wait for my period? Before starting the pill I was very regular if that matters.
