Re: CONTRACEPTION: Switching from BCPs to Copper IUDFrom: Pat Sonnenstuhl (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 1 Jul 2007 09:30:47 -0500 (CDT)
I doubt you will see much difference. You might skip a period for a month or two, which is a common side effect. I think the added estrogen/progesterone does make one feel better, but the levels are pretty high, and so you might see some subtle changes over time. Everyone is different, so it is hard to predict what impact it might have upon you. Most of the time women haven't been on the pill for such a long period of time. I guess I am also wondering why you assume you will need ert supplementation ? I have managed nicely without it, and not everyone needs ert supplementation. We still do not know the long term impact of ert, and especially the natural hormones. I would review the book Before the Change by Ann Louise Gittleman. It has some excellent ideas and suggestions for getting your hormone levels back into balance. http://home.comcast.net/~cnmpat/bkrevchg.htm ------------------------------------------------->> Thanks to all for the advice. I am not an at-risk user (I don't smoke, ------------------------------------------------->> blood pressure and cholesterol are excellent, and I exercise regularly ------------------------------------------------->> and watch my diet). My main reason for wanting to switch to the copper IUD is to stop using synthetic hormones and prevent some of the perimenopausal weight gain. As my hormone levels drop, I intend to use bio-identical HRT. But, my question still remains: other than unpredictable periods, what side effects can I expect from abruptly stopping the synthetic hormones I have been taking for 30 years?
