I couldn't agree more about talking with your OB provider ahead of time, and laying out what you feel is important for you. It is your babies birth, and you are the one that will live with the outcome. Become as educated as you can about the process, and decrease your fears as much as possible. I highly recommend the book Childbirth Without Fear by Grantly Dick Reed. I think it should be required reading for all OB providers, as birth doesn't need to be painful.

I also would like to comment...there are a variety of OB providers...OB/GYN Physicians, Family Practice physicians, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Certified Professional Midwives. All are trained and skilled in their realm. Each has a bit of a different perspective about birth.

Do your homework early, and seek out a provider with which you are comfortable, and who will be responsive to your needs and your desires. And, again, educate yourself as much as possible. Having a baby is a bit different than having your appendix out, as it affects three people...the baby, the mom and the partner. The events that happen during pregnancy and birthing will affect you and your child for its lifetime. Make it the best possible experience that you can.
