Mel,

I can also sympathize with your situation. In my early 20's my pap smears started coming back mildly abnormal. I had yearly paps. I switched to my current Dr. after 3 or 4 years of this. He suggested a colpo and biopsy if needed- the biopsy came back as CIS - cervical carcinoma insitu - if left alone would likely have developed into cervical cancer. I had a leep done and the margins were clear. Following this I had paps every 3 mos and colpos every 6 mos for 1 year, then paps every 6 mos. I too was HPV high risk which made it more important to have paps twice yearly. I did this for 10 years before my hysterectomy. I still have paps yearly even with out a cervix as I am still high risk HPV and vaginal cancer is a risk.

I will have yearly paps as long as the mild dysplasia stays mild with colpos every 2 years.

I know it is a pain, but it is a life saving screen. I recommend that you continue with the paps every six months and if I were you I would have intermittent colpos, biopsy any suspicous spots.

I believe the recommendations that you read for paps every three years are for women who have normal paps and aren't high risk HPV. It was also from the journal of internal medicine - not the specialists ob/gyn.

Good luck - I am not a medical professional - this is just my opinion.
