VAGINALBLEEDING: post-coital vaginal bleeding - ? trauma ? other cause

Sorry but this is quite a long question. About two weeks ago I had sex with my boyfriend and started bleeding afterwards. As it had felt as though we were doing it at a slightly awkward angle, I thought it might have been a ?injury to the anterior wall of my vagina. Also, afterwards there was a dull pain type feeling - although pain is probably too strong a word - which felt internal.

How common is an internal injury and what is the nature of such an injury usually (is it a tear, how deep is it? etc)? Also, if this is the problem, how long should I abstain from sex to allow it to heal? And also what could be other causes for the bleeding? Also, I had a dark discharge (like old blood rather than new blood) over the week that followed, however, I do have a history of very irregular periods which hasn't been helped by the implanon I currently have.
