Re: GENERAL: Endometrial ablation - How soon after do you usually get a period? From: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 May 2007 20:01:49 -0500 (CDT)
Well, I am finding out from my research that there really is no true answer. Some have one shortly after surgery and others whenever their period would have been due (providing they were regular before) and others no bleeding at all. It seems to vary with some having actual periods, some having just spotting, some having phantom periods, and some having light periods the first month and heavy periods the second month. Egads! None of these seem to be an indicator the first few months. It supposedly takes at least 3 months and some say 6 months before the results are known. For me, I started having horrible cramps about 23 days post ablation (and 34 days after my last period)but very minimal bleeding and mostly spotting. I assume that was it because I had a lot of premenstrual symptoms, just not the bleeding. I would love to say that I am optimistic that this is all I will ever have, but in my reading of other womens' experiences, it seems that month #2 was not as pleasant. There seems to be a much larger failure rate too than I was aware of before I had the procedure. The brochures made it sound great, but I was surprised to find out how many women ended up having failed ablations, second ablations, or hysterectomies when I started checking other support sites on the internet. That being said, most of those women still say it is worth trying the ablation first. There are a lot of successes too. I hope you and I will be one of them!
