CHRONICPAIN: Need advise

I am 38 and my whole life I have had heavy periods that are always on time. A few months ago immediately after starting iron pills 3 times a day I missed my period actually I had it very light and then it was gone. That happened for two periods with light spotting on and off and mild cramps. A few weeks ago I stopped taking the iron pills then a week ago I started getting cramps and spotting. Yesterday the cramps were horrible and I started my normal period which is very heavy (heavy is normal for me). The cramps are still very bad. Last week I went to the gymo and she did a pap and a pelvic which on my right ovary was a little sore so she didnt finish. Today I went a got a ultra sound. My left ovary has about a 1 inch fluid filled cyst. Also the lining of my uterus was 1.5 (cant remember if it was mm or cm). They said normal is .5. They said that since I was on my period it should be much thinner as my uterus is shedding its lining. They checked a ultas sound I had last year at it was 1.9 which was thicker then now but never said anything about it. I also have blood clots which I have had all of my life. Now they want to do a d and c and a laparoscopy or something like that. I am hesitant and want some advise. They did say the cyst was fluid filled and generally not something to worry about. Can anyone give me any advise? Should I get a second opinion? Could I get a cat or MRI instead of surgery?
