GENERAL: CA-125 what's it good for?

I am curious to know what the CA-125 test is good for. I've read that it is/isn't a good indicator of cancer and/or endometriosis. So, what IS it's purpose? I wonder since it seems that it really doesn't tell you anything, but it's still given. Does getting a normal result mean you're in the clear, given that it seems an elevated level may mean nothing?

I'd enjoy reading about what it's good for. Thanks, Kris
