GENERAL: Laparoscopic surgery and anemia - increased risks?From: Mishy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:36:41 -0500 (CDT)
About 6 weeks ago, my lab tests indicated that I had anemia and my OB/GYN started me on iron. I have been taking the iron, but I feel like I am having more pronounced symptoms of anemia now including dizziness, an episode of near fainting, weakness, and tachycardia. Given that I have had 3 heavy periods during that time, it would not surprise me if the iron supplements are helping very little. What concerns me, however, is that I am scheduled to have laparoscopic surgery next Friday to remove an ovarian cyst as well as having a D&C and endometrial ablation done at the same time. I am concerned because as I do more research, I find that there seem to be increased risks because of the anemia including anesthesia complications, possible blood transfusions, increased risk of infection and slower healing. The surgery will not be done at the hospital, but at a surgery center about 10 to 15 minutes away from the nearest hospital. I am worried if something happens, a surgery center might not be as prepared as a hospital to deal with it. Should I be reconsidering having the procedures done, or are the risks of surgery with anemia greatly exagerated?
