Re: COLPOSCOPY: Period during scheduled colposcopyFrom: Melissa L (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 10 Apr 2007 16:26:32 -0500 (CDT)
I am not sure about your period affecting the results of any biopsy that may be taken. I do know, from personal experience, that the proceedure, while somewhat uncomfortable, is not that painful.... It is a little more in depth then a regular pap, but is performed in basically the same way. If your provider feels the need for a biopsy, s/he should tell you before they take any, and it should only hurt for a few moments right when it is taken. If I remember correctly, the last one I had done, the doctor took three biopsies and any pain was gone before she removed the speculum... the pain from a biopsy is almost like the slight pain you might have felt when you got your ears pierced for the first time, quick, sudden and over before you knew it... one trick my old GYN always deployed was giving her patients 2 hershey kisses before hand to help with any blood sugar issues that might have come up due to being in the pap position for so long or from the suddenness of the biopsies... hope this calms your nerves a little.... some doctors have a topical spray they can use to sort of numb your cervix to help also, so ask if your doc has this if you are concerned with the pain...
