PREGNANCY: Wanting a 2nd baby with a uterus abnormality and a blood clot disorderFrom: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 9 Apr 2007 10:54:29 -0500 (CDT)
I have had irregular and long cycles with intensely painful periods pretty much my whole life. I am still breastfeeding though so now I haven't had a period in 2 years. We aren't trying for our next baby yet, but we do want more children whenever it happens. It took us a little over a year to conceive our daughter, even with temperature charting and monitoring for my fertile times, probably because I had less fertile times than others due to my long cycles. My daughter was due January 10th, but my OB was performing my 36 week ultrasound and found I had almost no fluid left, and also that my placenta was starting to shut down. They weren't sure why at the time, and she felt it was best to induce me, so they did and she was born on Dec. 16th. She was 4 lbs. 14 oz. and spent 5 days in the NICU for jaundice and breathing problems. My OB found after delivery that I have a heart shaped uterus, and that my placenta had formed into the top curve part of it- and so she originally thought that was why the placenta had started to shut down. She did mention to me that she could have my blood tested to make sure I didn't have a clotting issue. I was just tested in February '07 at my annual checkup. My tests came back negative for everything but did come back positive for Factor 5 Leiden. My OB referred me to a hemotologist and I just went to see him yesterday for the first time. He said he didn't see anything about my placenta problem on my records from my OB's office, and that a clot in the placenta is usually rare. He spent 5 minutes talking with me, and felt I didn't need any special care or treatment at all, and he sent me on my way. He fortunately said I only have one of the mutations of the factor 5, but I still feel a little confused. Does this sound right that I won't need to take any precautions for my next pregnancy? I think they basically aren't sure if the reason my placenta started shutting down was due to my heart shaped uterus, or the factor 5. They did send my placenta off for observation after the birth, so maybe I need to have more of a detailed discussion about that with my OB. My hemo Dr. said it would be up to my OB if she really feels I need a prenatal specialist next time around. What are my chances of having a successful pregnany with both the clotting disorder, and the heart shaped uterus? I am nervous to get pregnant again. Any advice would be appreciated.
