(continued from PART I)

...And then I proceeded to never regain my period.

I called the endocrinologist -- who told me that my body could take up to 6 months to "right itself" following the cessation of my BCPs, and that if it didn't by then, THEN we'd investigate. I tried to take him at his word and wait, but about two weeks ago I couldn't do it any longer and I made an appt with my GYN. She seemed optimistic that everything was ok, but asked that I have my bloodwork forwarded to her office.

The day of my appointment, everything went well at first -- she told me blood pressure was 90/60, and even gently ribbed me, saying that I certainly "didn't look pregnant," that my BMI was low and I could stand to gain a couple of pounds. She seemed surprised when I explained that I *had* gained a bunch of pounds in the past several months -- which is why I was seeing the endo-doc. Then she sat down to study my bloodwork... and her expression changed. While she was reading, I mused "the endo thinks that I may be low on testosterone or something." She looked up at me from under her glasses and said "he *thinks* you may be low testosterone?? Honey, you're so low on both testosterone AND estrogen that your levels are that of a post-menopausal woman." She then told me that I should be put back on BCPs right away (ortho cyclen this time, cause it has a higher estradil boost), as she was worried that I could be headed for osteoporosis.

Because I'm only 23 years old and have long looked forward to eventually having children, I asked "I know you only have one test in front of you so it's kind of a ballpark guess, but what does this mean for my chances of having babies?" She replied "Well, at this point, I think that if you were to try on your own you wouldn't have much success. But with fertility aids your chances will be well over 90%. You may also need to gain a couple of pounds for me." I reiterated that I HAD gained weight, and she asked me if I'm athletic. I told her I dance a few times a week, but not professionally. She proceeded to chalk up my amenorrhea to a "low body fat percentage" (even though I explained to her that my body fat % is actually 21% -- which is not at ALL low for my height/weight/small build). Nonplussed, she told me to just restart my BCPs and we'll talk about babies in a few years, when I'm ready...
