MENORRHAGIA: Lengthy (but important) question: PART I

First of all, thanks to any and everyone who reads this -- my head's been swimming for a while now, and I could use some edification!

I'm a 23 y/o, 110 lb, 5'3" collegiate who started having some chronic symptoms last year... In and of themselves, the symptoms didn't seem too obtrusive -- generally peeing a lot, mild insomnia, low libido, etc. It was only when I sat down and made an itemized list that I realized I had some widespread issues. In addition to the aforementioned ones, here are the other symptoms I experienced:

*hair thinning/falling out *dry skin/skin sensitivities *weight gain (to the tune of 10-15 lbs in just a couple of months - a lot for a small frame, mostly around the middle which is so NOT my usual pattern; I'm very pear shaped) *increase in acne *vaginal dryness *increased appetite/cravings for carbs *frequent infections (sinus, flu, etc)

I decided to visit an endocrinologist, who proceeded to test me for everything under the sun without ever giving me answers. After seeing him for 5 months, I was left with $5,000 in medical bills and a glib "Well, I think you may be low on testosterone, so you should stop your BCPs for a while." He also told me that he thought my weight gain was due to slightly elevated cortisol (Cushings was ruled out), and so he prescribed be Ivermectin (an obesity med) and told me I shouldn't eat more than 1,000 calories a day. When I suggested that may be too low, and that maybe 1500 was more reasonable, he told me "if you have 1200 you'll maintain this new, higher weight, but if you go to 1500 I *guarantee* you you'll continue to gain weight. Take carbs out of your diet -- almost completely, if you can."

So I did -- or I tried to, anyway. I took the Ivermectin, and when I complained that it gave me headaches, he just suggested that I take it every other day, and come back in 3 months for a blood pressure test. Meanwhile, I'd stopped taking my Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which I'd been on for just over a year. This was in mid-November. During the first week in December, I spotted ever-so-slightly (it was my first time spotting), and it was over almost as soon as it began.

(continued in PART II)
