Does the man test positive for HIV? If yes then of course it is possible. If not then it would be highly unlikely for you to have contracted it from him - however, it can sometimes take awhile for the virus to show up so a negative test is not always a 100% guarantee that a person is virus-free.
And you don't have to be actively ill with the virus either.
