Re: Allergies and Asthma Exasperated by mentral cycle PLEASE HELP!From: anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 Sep 2003 23:35:50 -0500 (CDT)
I am suspicious of what your pulmonologist said. If you stop your periods by using birth control continuously, then your body is NOT going through hormone cycles. That's why people take the pill continuously to treat menstrual headaches, endometriosis, PMS, and other problems that come cyclically. The body stops going through the cycles and is on a steady level of hormones all the time. Then again, the pill might sometimes worsen depression, so you would have to check with your doctor about that. You might want to ask him to clarify what he meant by "stopping your period" because he might have meant something different. I don't know anything about Sarafem, so I don't know if it could be the cause. Try reading the patient information leaflet that comes with your refills to see if it lists asthma or allergy attacks as possible side effects. If so, you might need to switch to a different medication. Also, are you doing anything differently during your period that might trigger an attack? Like using a new brand of hygiene products or scented pantiliners? Do you eat different foods during that time? You might be exposing yourself to something that you're allergic to - pay attention to everything to use to see if you can narrow it down to any one thing.
