I was prescribed treatment with Efudex for dysplasia 15 years ago. In a recent exam with my current doc the topic was brought up and she said that most docs have stopped prescribing it for dysplasia. It is a creme that is meant for skin cancer I believe. It essentially eats away the skin, or in the case of dysplasia the surface of the cervix and surrounding area. For dysplasia it involves putting the cream into a yeast infection medication plunger and inserting it followed by a tampon (to keep the Efudex from coming out) at bedtime, then slathering yourself with A&D Ointment so the Efudex can't damage your labia. You have to remove the tampon the next morning in a bathtub of water so you can quickly wash off any Efudex that comes out onto the labia etc. (None of these precautions help, BTW.) As I recall treatment was once a week for 6 weeks, but I had to do it twice in a row. I almost cried when my doc at the time told me the first course hadn't got it all and I had to do it again. It is really incredibly painful...it starts to feel like hamburger up there. And don't even think about having sex during the treatment period. Not only is it extremely painful for you, the Efudex residue can also cause major pain to your partner's sensitive skin. To be fair, though, the second course of treatment got all the dysplasia and I haven't had another bad pap so far (knock on wood).
