efudex for cervical dysplasiaFrom: Lucy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 Sep 2003 11:59:47 -0500 (CDT)
My history is as follows: I am 28 years old and would like at some point the option of having a child. One year ago my pap came back showing high grade abnormalities with moderate dysplasia. My doctor performed a leep, and the biopsy showed that the lesions were in fact low grade. It also showed that some pre-cancerous tissue at the opening of the cervical canal had not been removed. I had two normal paps, and then last month my pap, confirmed by biopsy, came back showing low grade abnormalities. In part, I gather, because of the location (on/near canal), my doctoe performed another leep last week. The leep biopsy shows mild dysplasia, but my doctor wants me to go on a six-week regimen of efudex. I do not want to do this because a) it seems excessive for mild dysplasia and b) I have moderate eczema and am afraid of the pain and discomfort this treatment will cause me. I would like to ask what am I missing--what would make the efudex an appropriate treatment? Why would it be indicated? Many thanks.
