Anemia and 'female problems'

I am 33, married without children, and have been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia by blood tests ordered through my family doctor. For over a month I've been lethargic to the point of sleepy, have had mood swings, and have even become confused and made irrational decisions. My physician is having digestive system testing done, but asked that I make an appointment with my gynecologist because I've had constant abdominal pressure and pain at my navel. He said any internal bleeding there should be ruled out. My gynecologist read the blood test, didn't examine me, and said it was probably due to heavy menstral bleeding. I should take iron supplements, she said. She wasn't interested in performing any tests. I would like to hear from women who have experienced anemia and similar symptoms, and what your physician did to investigate the problem. I am thinking of either demanding a test be performed, or seek a second opinion.
