Syphilis

Would it be possible for one person to test positive for syphilis and three other alleged sex partners test negative? The female that tested positive claims that the male that tested negative gave her the syphilis. Wouldn't it right to assume that if the male that tested negative was having unprotected sex with the female that tested positive wouldn't the male have tested positive also? Thank you in advance. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
