Alesse: panic attacks and crying

I have recently started on Alesse (I am currently in my second week) and have been experiencing extreme anxiety and depression since 48 hours after my first pill. For the last week, I have not been able to stop crying. I get a hot flush over my skin and then the tears come. I am also experiencing panic attacks; I hyperventilate and cannot breath for up to ten minutes.

I am 24 years old and am healthy, active and do not smoke. I love my work, my life, and the man I'm with and have never been subject to depression or anxiety attacks before. I am VERY concerned about this and am praying that it is just part of the adjustment period.

Is this a normal side effect of the birth control pill? If so, how long can I expect this to last? Will this decrease over time? Is there a pill that would reduce these symptoms?

These side effects are making it almost impossible to function at work and my relationship is suffering.

Please help with any similar stories or advice. I have read through the other posting here but have not found anyone who has mentioned the crying or panic.

Thank you!
