It's like passing GIANT SLUGS, is this normal at almost age 48?

Have had 4 children, all normal pregnancies, full-term vaginal deliveries. Have always had irregular periods never longer than 34 days. Since being vegan (15 years) I've found periods to be light to moderate. Normally four days. For last two years I've experienced passing very large clots like giant slugs. Happened thrice yearly. For an hour of those cycles passing of these is associated with very heavy bleeding, so much that I'm tied to the toilet for an hour. Occurence unpredictable but up until now has generally been on day three of cycle. However, this year, have had two episodes of periods which have lasted three/four weeks with light/moderate bleeding in each case accompanied by days of passing enormous clots. I've seen a gynaecologist asked if passing these is normal he suggested yes. No reason to believe I've abnormalities nor disease within my reproductive system. Is this to be expected at my time of life. No other so-called menopausal symptons but the irritability/depression I'm also suffering due to severe financial/emotional/family strains and stresses we've experienced for years. Attempting to resolve these as matter of urgency. I consider my diet good. Wonder if studies have been done into mineral/vitamin deficiencies which may give rise to many of these problems which women seem to be having? I'm about to start course of ‘TheElixirOfLife’ health supplement containing over 50 minerals lacking in even good diets because of the depletion of such minerals from the soil in which our food is grown. It'll be interesting to see whether in fact my cycles return to normal in three/four months time. My question is 'Is it normal to pass such very large clots at my time of life? For how much longer can I expect this to continue?'
