Menapause

I am 43 years of age and have not had a period for three years. My tubes were tied in 1987. This week my period returned, with heavy bleeding and large blood clods. There was little or no pain I just felt slighly weaken. The heavy bleeding last for about three days filling up pads within an hour. Could I have been pregnant and had a miscarriage or is this normal because I went so long without a regular period. I am on my fifth day now and the bleed is starting to decrease but is still releasing small clods and heavy sprit. What could be the cause of this.
