IUD removal

I have had an IUD since the birth of my last child 10 years ago and am now in menopause. My doctor saw on an ultrasound that the IUD is in place but since the string is not evident, she could not remove it in the office and asked me to come in to the hospital to have it removed there. She said it will just be "10 minutes of discomfort", and was adamant that no pain relief is needed for the procedure. I am terrified. What should I do? Pat
