If if I were you I would follow up on an abnormal PAP. A PAP is only a screening tool, it doesn't give a definitive answer. Chances are everything is fine, but better safe than sorry. I know someone whose doctor told her she didn't need to follow up on abnormal PAP smears, and unfortunately she died from cervical cancer, leaving two young children behind. They should have explained to you that a PAP is a screening tool and why they need to take a closer look. Telling you that "your insurer makes them" is not a very good reason, and could cause you not to do it. I would also expect the doc's liability insurer would want him to follow up. In the case above, the woman's children sued the doc for not following up. They won, but of course nothing takes the place of their mother.
