Re: cystoscopy; what to expect?From: anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 31 May 2003 05:41:10 -0500 (CDT)
You can read about the cytoscopy procedure at: http://www.informationtherapy.org/kbase/default.htm However, before you go there: I recently had a cystoscopy done in a urologist's office. Since I wasn't particularly impressed w/him (1 1/2 hour wait after my appt time, then rushed thru, told what tests he was ordering and sent to the appt desk w/no time to ask questions. So fast I didn't even remember what he looked like!) I had some real reservations despite his good reputation. The day of the appt was no better. 20 minutes past appt time in waiting room and 1 hr 10 minutes waiting time in exam room (I made my displeasure at the long wait known at my first appt). As to the cystoscopy itself. A piece of cake. No where near as involved as the description at the site above. No advance preparations or instructions were given and none were needed. No sedation or anesthetic was used or needed. You can watch what the cystoscope is seeing on the monitor next to the exam table. Evidently your doctor does not anticipate utilizing sedation or anesthesia or you would be advised before hand. My cystoscopy was negative for any problems which may have contributed to my lack of discomfort. No biopsy was needed or done. I had no bleeding, only minor stinging my first urination after the test. Really ended up not feeling much different than a pelvic exam w/o the PAP smear.
