What you describe is not a classic description of a bartholin cyst (the waxing and waning, the itchiness) but it's still a possibility. It sounds even less like herpes. Herpes usually consists of either a fluid filled blister or the eroded crater that is left after the blister bursts. The lesions are usually exquisitely painful. But you need to have your lump actually looked at by a doc. A verbal description only goes so far.
