Hysterectomy - What are the risks?From: lori (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 May 2003 17:31:38 -0500 (CDT)
I just watched on our local news about a woman who had a hysterectomy, she had her rectum punctured. She seemed fine, she was walking a day after her surgery. Three days later her organs began to shut down. The doctor took her back to surgery only to find he had punctured her rectum. He repaired it, but it was too late. She died of infection and all of her organs failed. I have a problem with health professionals who say, "Accidents happen in surgery, some people die", that is true, but I think ob/gyns should have more surgical experience than they do. It's an injustice to women to receive inadequate care, especially in a surgicalsituation. I have many friends and acquaintances who have had "mistakes" preformed on them at the hands of their ob/gyns. I'm not picking on all ob/gyns, there are many fine ones if you are lucky enough to find one. I myself just did a search of my own, I felt uncomfortable with a previous ob/gyn I was seeing. I had a wonderful ob/gyn for 23 yrs. When he retired I went to a new one. After 2 yrs. and many doubts, I was searching for a better one. I found a great ob/gyn. I'm so grateful I searched for a new one. I later found out my former ob/gyn, the one I didn't care for, has some botched surgeries in his past! Educate yourself, it may save your life!
