Re: [Birth Control] Depressed from the pillFrom: falco (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 25 May 2003 19:23:59 -0500 (CDT)
Dearest Anon, I too had depression after starting on the pill.My doctor said I should get off of the pill immediately and gave me a mild antidepressant; I started on Wellbutrin because he said it starts working quickly. I have had less depression and no side effects in my case. It's hard to say if the depression was from the pill, but I felt better after stopping, and he said that the pill can cause depression. Depression is a tough situation. It alters our sense of reality so that we think that everything is going bad, and that no one cares about us. The real truth, that we would be able to see with healthier eyes, is that people really do care, things will get better, and there are lots of reasons to feel hopeful. In your case, this might be a purely biochemical reaction to the pill, but be sure to get all the emotional support you can during this time. And remember to pray, if that is something you generally turn to. Since leaving off with the pill, we are just using the over-the-counter BC's, but maybe you'd want something more reliable like a diaphragm or something. I am sure you will discuss all this with your Doc, but I just thought I'd share my experience as I know minutes and hours are sometimes really really long. Hope you get your joy back soon. You will be happy and healthy again, I know! Let me see, ways to beat depression: keep your schedule regular , take vitamins, read , sing, watch good movies, listen to music, dance, walk, change your bedsheets, dress nicely, reach out, solve as many little problems as you can until you are ready to face the big ones, don't let what you can't do keep you from doing what you can do, smile, spend time in nature and with children, old people, plants and animals, eat a really good peach or pear, treat your senses. Wear your most expensive perfume. Give your negative thoughts a 5 minute time limit before you force your brain to think about something else. Remember this is temporary. Remember someone cares what happens to you, and people really do need you and the world needs who you are. There is only one of you and you are special. Best regards, FALCO
