Hi Tina,

I am not a doc, but have had fibroids and anemia. If you have had severe anemia, a couple weeks without a period is not probably going to get you back to normal. Also there is a risk of bleeding during a myomectomy, so they want to make sure that your blood is in the best shape it can be in before surgery. It may help you avoid a transfusion if you bleed. Also, just because you don't have symptoms of anemia, doesn't mean it isn't there. I know for me that my anemia became very severe, but it worked up slowly to that point so I kind of got used to the symptoms. The docs were surprised I was doing as well as I was when they checked my blood.

I ended up bleeding in the recovery room after my hysterectomy and had to have transfusions. (I was in the ER 5 days before my scheduled surgery because my period was so heavy it didn't want to stop) I read an article, after my hyst, that being anemic can make the risk of bleeding during surgery higher. I have wondered if that is what caused my problem.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
